West and Russia sanction each other

RUSSIA / FSU POLITICS - In Brief 03 Aug 2022 by Alex Teddy

On August 2 the US sanctioned a large Russian metal company MMK Metalurji and Putin's reputed lover Alina Kabaeva. Kabaeva has had her visa cancelled. She is a member of the Russian Parliament and head of the National Media Group. Anti-corruption campaigner Aleksei Navalny has long requested sanctions against Miss Kabaeva. The EU and UK sanctioned Kabaeva in May 2022. Andrei Guryev has been sanctioned. He is an influential oligarch who was once a government minister. His yacht has been seized.  The US Treasury said it will prevent Russia obtaining money and material to prosecute its war in Ukraine.  Guryev's son Andrei Guryev Junior has also been sanctioned as has the family's investment firm: Dzhi AI Invest OOO. The sanctions means that their assets in the US have been frozen and Americans and US residents are not allowed to deal with them. On August 2 the US and the United Kingdom added more entities to their sanction list. The UK sanctioned two board members of Rosneft. The United States sanctioned 25 Airbus planes for supposedly breaking export control regulations. The planes were used by Urals Airlines, S7, Red Win, Nordwind and I Fly. These are minor Russian airlines. They might all go bust in 2023. The sanctions means they cannot attain spare parts or maintenance. The US says it wants to prevent Russia from exploiting Venezuelan oil. On August 2 Russia sanctioned various British politicians and journalists including former Prime Minister David Cameron. There are no additional economic sanctions as the UK scarcely trades with Russia now.
