Will Rebalancing in China Work?

We have argued in a previous note that the middle class in China is most likely much narrower than much analysis would suggest. This has important ramifications for rebalancing of the economy – a policy announced repeatedly by the Chinese leadership. I decided to analyze the data concerning retail sales and household consumption to see if there are any trends that would indicate the strength/weakness of consumption and would it mean for future rebalancing trends.
