Zelensky purges top officials

On July 27 President Zelensky fired the Commander in Chief of the Military. The president said that General Khomchak had caused misunderstandings. His replacement, Valery Zalushny, is widely well regarded.Khomchak has been given a role on the National Security and Defense Council. Three other senior military officers were dismissed. For months there have been rows among the top brass. The Defense Ministry and the Military have not been co-operating well. On July 26 Zelensky fired the two first deputy heads of the SBU (intelligence agency). The president said that this was to allow for an overhaul of the SBU. This comes only a week after Zelensky fired the very influential interior minister. The ratings of Zelensky and his party (Servant of the People) are dipping. People are frustrated that he has not made life better nor has he resolved the conflict by either victory or negotiation. However, he still has a good chance of being re-elected in 2022.
