Zelensky visits Black Sea island to mark 500 days of war

On July 8 he made a surprise to Snake Island. The 700 m by 700 m island is crucial in ensuring control of the eastern part of the Black Sea. A Russian warship famously asked its Ukrainian defenders to surrender on the first day of the war and they replied, ''Go F*** yourselves!'' Snake Island was seized by Russia early in the war but is now back in Ukrainian hands. The Black Sea Grain Initiative (BSGI) is up for an extension in July 2023. Russia says it will not extend it unless sanctions on its banks are loosened. Zelensky's visit to the island is perhaps provocative and reduces the chance that Russia will renew BGSI.  BSGI is vital in providing food for Egypt, Bangladesh, Turkey and other neutral countries. If BSGI ends, it is not clear whom they will blame for food shortages.
